Lace Industry in Sri Lanka



In mythology there were many stories in Lace Industry. Most of people have known that it was introduced by Portuguese people with their immigration. In ancient times the person called "Prince Vijaya" came to Sri Lanka. At that time there was a Queen called "Kuveni" was spinning threads. It has a doubt for what she used those threads. Is it used for making Lace or not. It is a confused one.

In Lace Industry, Galle is the well known city in Sri Lanka. The "Gamperaliya" which was created by Lester James Peris & "Kadulla" which was created by Darmasena Pathiraja both film had some scenes of weaving women. It tells about popularity of Lace Industry Southern coastal belt of Low country. 

Today it has a improvement of so many different shapes & patterns. It spreads at a coastal belt from Kalutara to Matara. There are so many traditional families which used to weave Lace from generation to generation. 









In the current world there are so many advantages from the Lace Industry. So many tourists came here to buy this Lace Products. Many inventors creates varies types of products like table mats, table runners, bed sheets, pillow cases, dress design items and etc. All Lace products are very beautiful one. If you watch that products I am very sure you will definitely buy that items. It is really amazing and attractive one. 

In Lace Industry it has its own technical method. At there they used a simple hand made machine called " Beeralu Pillow". It made by using softwood. 


Then you must draw a design on graph paper and mark it by using round pins. Next wrapped it around the Lace pillow. Then you ready some wooden bobbins and wrap some threads on it. Then weave the Lace by moving bobbins according to your pattern. It should be compulsory to have some knowledge on those weaving techniques. It is not difficult for learning.
