Kottawa Conservation Fores
In 1930, this was named as a forest. Thought it was a part of Sinharaja Rainforest, but today it becomes a another Rainforest by dividing little by little. Now today it has 37 acres only.
There so many trees gather get together & then it makes a huge canopy. Because of this one it protects the earth from Sunlight & gives a little cold too. So that if the person entered to the forest, there is no need to worry about his weariness.
After entering the Kottawa Rainforest, you have met some little foot paths which run towards the various directions. One path opens for the Tea plantation in Downcountry. You can watch fresh Tea leaves at there & there also Tea Research Center is located near by the Kottawa Rainforest. It is a nice experience for the tourists to watch all this in a one trip.
Other foot path runs towards a Natural Water Tank. This is the most attractive spot of tourists. They all come there for bathing. Not only this but also Kottawa Rainforest is a nice bird paradise. There are 70 species of birds, including 12 endemics, such as Yellow - fronted Barbet, Brown - capped Babbler, Spot - winged Thrush, Sri Lankan Spurfowl and Grey Hornbill. ThePurple - faced Leaf Monkey, Toque Monkey and Giant Squirrel dominate the canopy area of the forest. Besides some fish species, reptiles, snakes and lizards could be found in this area. The vegitation is dominated with Dipterocarpus Species and Tree Ferns, where orchids and Moss grow on their tall tree trunks.
Kottwa is such a nice Rainforest in Sri Lanka. It has a great bio diversity. Finally I would like to tell you, if you have visited this forest, don't pollute the environment there. It is our paramount duty to protect it for our future generations.
