Summary :
"A Tale of Two Cities" was written by Charles Dickens. This story was connected with two countries. They were England & France. This story was beginning with the incident of Jarvis Lorry,the employer of Tellson's Bank. He travelled from London to Paris on a secret mission for his customer called Doctor Alexander Manette. There was a information about Dr.Manette after a 18 years secret imprisonment in Paris. He was alive & had recently been released. According to that information Jarvis Lorry & Lucie Manette,the daughter of Dr.Manette went there to bring him back to London.
They came to Paris & they found the Ernest Defarge,the doctor' s former servant. He was the owner of the wine shop & he had a wife called Madam Defarge. They were put Dr.Manette at there garret room. All were gone there & before that Defarge told them about the situation of Dr.Manette. Dr.Manette was suffering from a disease called dementia. It was a some kind of memory lost situation. Because of that disease Dr.Manette forgot about himself & he behaved as a shoe maker. All were talking with him but he couldn't recognise anyone. Then Lucie approached towards him. Dr.Manette could able to recognise his daughter because of her hair & then little by little his memory came back & after that Mr.Lorry & Lucie took him to England.
After a five years later, Jerry Cruncher,the porter for Tellson' s Bank took a message to Mr.Lorry. That message was from the courthouse. Mr.Lorry had been called as a witness for the trial of Charles Darnay,a frenchman accused of being a spy for France & the United States. Dr.Manette & Lucie Manette were also witnesses for that trial too. There was a more percentage of guilty of treason on Darnay because of the testimony of the witness called John Barsad & Roger Cly. It helped to put Darnay in a guilty verdict. Cydney Carton was the lawyer of Darnay & Mr.Stryver was an assistant of Carton. Darnay & Carton both were same in their appearance. Because of that reason Styver convinced that Cly & Barsad were the real spies & court got the decision to release the Darnay.
After the trial Darnay,Carton & Styver all were in love with Lucie Manette because of her kind & beauty. Styver decided to propose to Lucie & Mr.Lorry avoided him. There also Carton confessed his love to Lucie,but he didn't propose to her because he was a drunkard & careless man. He thought it wasn't good for her. But he told about his love for Lucie & promised her to do anything for her gladly without expecting anything. He vowed to give his life for that to protect her beloved ones too. Finally Darnay proposed to Lucie & both were getting married with the blessing of Dr.Manette. While the couple was on their honeymoon,Dr.Manette again suffered from the dementia & again behave as a shoe maker. At that time Mr.Lorry helped him to come out from the disease.
Meanwhile,the situation in France went worse because of the Marquis St.Evremonde's murder. Marquis was the Darnay's cruel & unfeeling uncle. He was killed by the person who lived in Paris street. There was a child & Marquis was running down a child with his carriage. Because of that reason Marquis was killed. These time Darnay gave up all the ties with the France & worked in England as a tutor of French Language & Literature.
The revolution started with the lead of Defarges in 1789 & they destroyed the Bastille. Revolutionaries got the power & control of France. They were imprisoned & killed their enemies of the state. Darnay got a letter from Monsieur Gabelle,the Steward of Evremonde. He was caught by the revolutionaries & he asked a help from Darnay. He begged to Darnay to come to France to save him. Without thinking about that dangerous situation,Darnay departed for France because he felt a sense of duty to his servant. Once he reached to Paris,though,revolutionaries took him to La Force prison secretly without of contacting anyone. Darnay asked help from Mr.Defarge & he agreed to help him.Mr.Defarge sent message about Darnay to Mr.Lorry. Mr.Lorry informed Dr.Manette about that incident.
After that Dr.Manette,Lucie & Lucie's daughter all were come to the Paris. Dr.Manette was a former prisoner of the Bastille & that helped him to get the attention from revolutionaries towards him. Because of that he found information about his son-in-law & he got the trial for Darnay.Dr.Manette's powerful testimony at the trial,helped to release Darnay. After that Darnay reunited with his wife & daughter. But after a few hours passed,revolutionaries again arrested Darnay because of the accusation of Defarges.
Defarges found the revelation of a paper document of Dr.Manette from the Dr.Manette's former cell in the Bastille. That document was about telling all the truth of Evremondes for the murder of Madam Defarge' s family & his injustice. Based on that powerful evidence,court sentenced to death for Darnay.
Sydney Carton also came to Paris because of Lucie Manette. He got the decision to sacrifice himself to save her husband's life. He also heard some rumor about Lucie & her daughter. Defarges were discussing a plan to kill Lucie & her daughter. Sothat Carton arranged for them to leave Paris immediately. After that with the help of John Barsad, Carton went into Darnay's cell. He drugged Darnay & exchanged places with him. Then Barsad carried Darnay out of the prison safely.
Madam Defarge went to search for Lucie to arrest her. But they were already fled to safety. There was a struggle between Miss.Pross,the caretaker of Lucie Manette & Madam Defarge. At there Madam Defarge was shot by Miss.Pross accidentally & she was died. Darnay returned with the Manette to London safely. Carton died in Darnay's place at the guillotine,he sacrificed his life to save Lucie's happiness.
